8th May 1945 and 2026

Has nobody else noted the irony that yesterday, 08 May, when 1451 new Reform local authority councillors were announced in England, is also is the same day that Victory in Europe is celebrated across Europe.

On 08 May 1945, the extreme right wing nazi party signed their surrender in Europe.

Since 1948 the European Union and its predecessors have ensured peace and shared prosperity amongst members

Over the past 2 years the traditional centre left UK Labour Party has failed the working people who placed their faith in them in 2024, and in doing so yesterday lost 2035 councillors across Great Britain.

I suggest that Labour needs to change rapidly.

The SNP in Scotland continues its steady decline and stays in power simply because it is the least worst party. The SNP have failed to build or even maintain roads outside the central belt, it has managed the almost total failure of crucial ferry services, failed to provide affordable housing, seen a decline in educational standards and a drop in average citizens living standards. Yesterday, Scotland elected 17 new Reform members to the Scottish Parliament making them second equal to Scottish Labour. Welsh voters elected 17 new Reform members to their Senedd.

Both Westminster and Holyrood parliaments chose boring men to lead them and stabilise previously erratic policy swings. Instead, both men have managed declines in income, housing, infrastructure and industry.

Hopefully with Plaid Cymru in Wales, SNP in Scotland and Sinn Féin in Northern Ireland all now being the largest parties in their respective countries, we can persuade electors and politicians that our place is in Europe, not unwillingly tied to an increasingly far right England with a tendency towards key fascist ideals of nationalism and elitism.
